The National Fire Chiefs Council’s vision for environment sustainability and climate change is to:

Protect our communities … Protect our planet … Protect our future

The work of the National Fire Chiefs Council in relation to environment sustainability and climate change is to make sure that the Fire and Rescue Sector is focused on supporting sustainable and safe communities. The Fire and Rescue Sector, alongside all public sector organisations, has a legal duty to act. The Climate Change Act 2008 commits the UK government to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by at least 100% of 1990 levels (net-zero) by 2050. This includes reducing emissions from the devolved administrations (Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland), which account for about 20% of the UK’s emissions.

The National Fire Chiefs Council has developed this toolkit for use by the Fire and Rescue Sector. The aim is to enable the sector to share a range of research, data, information, good practice, and case studies. It is a live document that will help create a more informed, evidence-based approach across the sector.
