Are you an inclusive leader within the fire and rescue service looking for an opportunity to really make a difference? Come and join our West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service… As an Assistant Chief Fire Officer (ACFO), you will make a significant contribution to the management accountability of the Service, including the day to day leadership and management of operational services and teams, the delivery of the Community Risk Management Plan (CRMP) and the delivery of the service improvement programme following the last HMICFRS inspection report. As part of the leadership team, you will be responsible for ensuring the Service is effective, efficient and meets organisational and national objectives, both now and in the future. This will include developing targets, standards and policy, the delivery of projects and initiatives and close partnership working.

You will have a strong focus on operational performance, be able to drive efficiencies and be expected to work collaboratively, building partnerships and relationships both internally within WSCC and externally to achieve collective outcomes. In addition, you will make a key contribution to meeting the current challenges facing the County Council, which include continuing to improve key services according to Member priorities and to deliver these improvements within very tight financial constraints. The improvement in service must therefore come from innovative ways of working, greater customer focus and strong delivery and performance management.

As a member of West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service’s Service Executive Board, you will be responsible for delivering the vison and strategic direction of the Fire and Rescue Service by leading and developing a highly effective and trusted service in a landscape of transformation and change.

Experience and Skills

You will have demonstrable experience of working in a strategic, leadership role within a fire and rescue service and of successfully leading change to improve outcomes for residents and staff. As an inclusive leader, you will be people focussed with a proven ability to motivate and empower others, and a clear understanding of the impact of change and decision making on individuals. You will be passionate about continuous improvement, be comfortable working in ambiguous situations and have experience of working in a political environment.
