Applications are welcome from existing UK wholetime Station Managers and competent wholetime Watch Managers as a promotion opportunity.


The following criteria must be satisfied to be eligible to apply:

  • be a wholetime substantive and competent Watch Manager (or above) in a UK Fire and Rescue Service.
  • have no current/outstanding development action plans, performance improvement action plans or capability issues related to competency.
  • be free of current formal disciplinary awards throughout the entire process.
  • have completed an Annual Review (AR) in the last 12 months and showing potential for promotion with line manager recommendation (within the AR talent assessment section). (Internal only)
  • successfully passed Level 3 Diploma in Fire Engineering and Science OR a Level 3 Certificate in Fire Safety.
The selection process will comprise of:
  • Stage 1 - Potential for promotion identified within the annual review process (Internal only)
  • Stage 2 - Completion of an online application form and subsequent shortlisting
  • Stage 3 - Operational Knowledge and Understanding Assessment (if applicable see below)
  • Stage 4 - Operational Command Assurance
  • Stage 5 - Online Psychometric assessment
  • Stage 6 - Presentation and Interview
  • Stage 7 - Pre employment checks

Please note, for internal staff, in respect of the requirement for a level 3 IFE this is only applicable for current WMs who were promoted after the IFE became a compulsory qualification in order to progress to that rank.  Any WMs who were in role prior to that may apply without holding that specific qualification provided all the other criteria is met.   

Operational Knowledge and Understanding Assessment

Successfully shortlisted applicants will be required to undertake an operational knowledge and understanding assessment based on National Occupational Guidance (NOG), this will consist of a number of different scenarios you may be faced with as a Station Manager and is graded Pass or Fail.

Please note, if you hold the IFE Level 4 Certificate in Fire Service Operations there is no requirement to undertake this stage.

Online Psychometric Test

Applicants, who are successfully shortlisted, prior to progressing to Interview, will be required to complete a Psychometric Assessment, these are a set of questions used to understand your motives, preferences, needs and talents (in a work context) to form part of the interview process.

Operational Command Assurance

Applicants will be assessed and graded (Pass or Fail) against Skills for Justice Intermediate Incident Command scoring criteria. However, prior to this assessment taking place, development opportunities will be available for all successful shortlisted candidates prior to the assessment taking place.

WYFRS Command Training Team will email appointments to all applicants. However, any attendance on these development sessions is voluntary.

Please note, there is no requirement for WYFRS staff members who hold the Skills for Justice Intermediate Incident Command qualification to undertake this stage.

Presentation and Interview

Applicants will be required to prepare a 15 minute presentation, of which the title will be given beforehand and a 45 minute interview.

All offers of employment will be subject to a skills gap analysis, references, medical, fitness test, Disclosure and pre-employment checks.
