Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service is seeking applications from outstanding personnel wishing to be considered for a role as Watch Manager. Applications for the Watch Manager Promotion and Assessment Process are invited, from either competent Watch Managers or competent Crew Managers, who work within the Whole-time duty system for a Local Authority service. Successful applicants will be placed in a Watch Manager’s promotion pool from which job will be allocated as vacancies arise.

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service received an ‘outstanding’ rating for its promotion of values and cultures from the HMICFRS inspection in November 2018. It also received overall ‘good’ ratings in effectiveness, efficiency and people. We are an inclusive organisation and are striving to reflect the communities we serve. We therefore particularly welcome applications from female, black and minority ethnic and LGBT+ staff who are underrepresented in our operational workforce.

Selection process

The following elements must be undertaken to complete the selection process: 

  • Expression of interest – 1 October 2021
  • Application form – 18 October 2021 
  • Report – 18 October 2021 
  • Roleplay – w/c 8 November 2021 
  • Interview – w/c 8 November 2021 
  • Level 1 incident command assessment - TBC

Further information regarding the process will be provided to applicants via email but it is highly recommended that applicants attend a Watch Manager Promotion and Assessment Process briefing session, currently scheduled for 1 October 2021, information for which will be provided on expression of interest.

Application process

Applications should be made using the form TRG57b which is available via expression of interest to the email Expressions of interest must be received by 09:00 on 1 October 2021, no late entries will be accepted and candidates will not be able to progress through the process.

Application forms and report subject will be circulated to all candidates once the online briefing has been completed. All eligibility must be met, and the application verified by your Station Manager.

The completed and signed TRG57b must be submitted, in conjunction with completed report, by email to the Employee Relations and Resourcing Team (ERRT) using email address by 09:00 hours on Monday 18th October 2021. Late applications will not be accepted.

Successful Candidates

Successful candidates will be entered into a pool of staff eligible for either operational or day duty positions. Successful applicants will also be expected to undertake a level 3 apprenticeship unless they are ineligible due to recognised prior learning. Personnel that are enrolled on the L3 management apprenticeship programme will be required to meet a Level 2 standard of functional skills (English/Maths). To meet these standards candidates can either: 

  • Produce certificates that demonstrates a pass equivalent to O level or grade C GCSE
  • Complete functional skills training and exams through the apprenticeship programme
